Jerry Barton > Hear ye! Hear ye! The Medieval Fair season has begun.
2013-05-05 Seen yesterday at a small fair in Marchegg, Austria. Its first year, so no big crowds and the German "professional" medievalists were still at their fairs in Germany. This troubadour sang well (in Middle High German as well as modern German), played at least four different instruments, and entertained.

2013-04-04 This stretch along the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl is up to 5 degrees (C) warmer than the surrounding area, which is usually 2 degrees warmer than Vienna. Its official name is the Hölle (Hell) district of the town of Illmitz. The water is still a tad cold for swimming, but the sailors are out. Except for the ferry boats, no powered boats are allowed on the lake. The air tends to be a bit misty, especially when there is little or no wind - as in this shot.

2013-05-03 This Western Yellow Wagtail chose this perch to sing from. They breed in most of Europe.

Many thanks for the comments on yesterday's heron snack. @Rob - special thanks - yes, sharpness is a problem on my shots, especially when using the telephoto+converter, which means manual focus and more jitter and smaller aperture. I think this shot is sharper

2013-05-02 A closer white heron - but not in Vienna. About an hour south of Vienna is Lake Neusiedl - shallow with lots of reeds and with surrounding fields. Here is a white heron (much closer to the camera than my shot about two weeks ago) enjoying a snack. Not sure, I think it is a small grass snake.

And many thanks for the comments on yesterday's shot of young grey herons. @Donna - yes, they do look like dinosaurs, don't they! Something primitive about them.

2013-04-25 A close-up from the same scene as yesterday's shot (and many thanks for the comments on that shot). Everything is blossoming. Three weeks ago we were shovelling snow, now the public swimming pools are opening up early. High temp predicted today 27C (80F)

Many thanks for the comments on the storks. I think the main problem is that there is little for them to eat at the moment - and a fresh inch of snow on the ground. By April it is supposed to get warmer.

Jerry Barton > Sunset over Neusiedlsee. Burgenland. Early March. Dormant vinyards on the plain in the foreground. Far on the horizon, the outline of the 2000 m high Schneeberg can be seen. (about 80km away).

Jerry Barton > Wayside Shrine
2012-12-14 Wayside shrines are common in rural Austria (and Bavaria). This is a 'Bildstock" (i.e. picture column), showing glass painting of St. George (far side) and St. Leopold. They served as places to stop, were considered safer from rogues, and helped to define the path.
Many thanks for the comments on my recent picture of snow on the 'mountain' - as to the comment that it doesn't look much like Vienna - actually it was just a pile of earth at a construction site. I especially liked the lack of scale in the shot.

2012-12-04 Between spending time in the wine cellar selling my cards and prints, I had a chance to spend a couple of hours outside. I don't do much in B&W but somehow this shot looked better to me without color. I hope you enjoy it. Constructive criticism very welcome. P.S. This is the Lenz Moser "Hochkultur" used throughout Austria since 1950, where the yearly shoots start about 1m above ground, and the rows are about 2-3m apart.
