2010-07-26: Went for a walk yesterday and ended up here - on a foot bridge over the Danube. Well, not quite today's Danube. But a few years ago (1809) when Napoleon occupied Vienna, this was still part of the meandering Danube and today it is still marsh and part of the Danube Wetlands National Park. Napoleon still had to attack the Austrian army on the eastern bank, so his army crossed the Danube here on pontoon bridges in late May. He was defeated and withdrew back to downtown Vienna - but crossed again in July and defeated the Austrians (Battle of Wagram).
P.S. This area is also within the city limits.
I was out most of the day yesterday, so didn't have a chance to comment much - today will be better. Thanks for your comments yesterday.
