Jerry Barton > A summer day, nature, relaxation, and ...
2012-07-31 Some people can't leave technology at home.
Many thanks for the comments on the jumper. There was an inflatable trampoline just outside the picture that he was using to jump into the water.
Jerry Barton > Look out below!
2012-07-28 I have no idea who this is, but he was enjoying himself. This was taken at the same place as yesterday's picture - and I thank you kindly for the comments (the swimmer did not get hit by the rower)
Jerry Barton > Look Behind! Look! A Head!
2012-07-27 As seen on the 'Alte Donau', a recreational area in Vienna. On hot summer days, all kinds of people are around, in, and on the water (just no boats with motors, except electro)
Many thanks for the overwhelming response to my 'hesitation' picture. Much appreciated. [And the 'guest' comment "it's red" was from my wife, who often does not know what to say about my pictures]
Jerry Barton > At the Edge
2012-07-24 A summer flower attracts a small bee. Will it go further or look for an easier reward?
Seen in a small garden in Niedersulz, Lower Austria.
Jerry Barton > Die Studlhofstiege
2012-07-23 The Studlhof Steps are a famous Jugendstil architectural feature of Vienna's ninth district. BUilt around 1910, they became well known as a symbol of autumn after the publication of the eponymous melancholy novel in 1951.
"Wenn die Blätter auf den Stufen liegen herbstlich atmet aus den alten Stiegen was vor Zeiten über sie gegangen...
Viel ist hingesunken uns zur Trauer und das Schöne zeigt die kleinste Dauer."
(rough translation of poetic German) "When old leaves line the steps, memories of that which travelled over them arise like exhalations. We mourn the passing of much, and beauty seems to last the least"
And on another note - why does the picture look like September instead of July? Because of the rain and because of the chestnut blight.
On a sunnier note - it is a beautiful day, so I should go take more pictures.
Jerry Barton > Decor
2012-07-15 No longer a photo, I was inspired to give this photo of a Parisian store front some treatment by visiting a retrospective exhibition of the works of Franz Zadrazil, an Austrian painter, yesterday. Zadrazil was an expert at painting simplified and 'alive' views of normal city walls in Vienna, Paris, and New York - especially ones showing decay. The ones he painted to look like flaking metal had signs in front saying (more or less) "this is not metal - he was a painter - don't touch it". Such a scene as I took might make one small corner of one of his paintings.

Exceptional thanks are due to all of you who commented on my picture of the sailboats. Very much appreciated. For me, the picture caught my mood that day.
Jerry Barton > Summer Dreams
2012-07-08 Sailboats on Lake Neusiedl in Austria. A sparkling very hot day last Saturday. [pp: I erased the further shore. Lake Neusiedl is at most 12km wide, ringed with low hills]

Many thanks for the comments on my shot of Galeries Lafayette.
Jerry Barton > Temple
2012-07-06 A bit of tonal contrast to bring out the details. This is an exhibition of enterprise - the Galeries Lafayette in Paris, still (or again) going strong. Finished in 1912, it was built in French Art Nouveau style, with a huge glass and steel dome. [I didn't purchase anything].
Thanks for all the thoughtful comments on yesterday's picture.
Jerry Barton > Ah, Paris!
2012-07-05 Why are the quays along the Seine so romantic? Or is it just that young people have nowhere else to go?
This shot shows the eastern tip of the Île Saint-Louis.
Many thanks for the comments on yesterday's picture of gargoyles. As some people noted, there was a 'tad' of pp to bring out the outlines. I added a sketch layer, since the stones were mostly the same color.
Jerry Barton > Gurgelers and Gargoyles
2012-07-04 Detail from the Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris.
Jerry Barton > Nighttime
2012-06-30 Another shot of the Eiffel Tower. Taken on the corner near my hotel. And yes, the young lady stood there taking a picture for the whole 30 seconds of the exposure.
Jerry Barton > Guess where I am!
2012-06-29 Actually I've been here all week, but sitting in meetings all day long. This shot was taken approx. midnight - isn't it wonderful that pairs are resting on the grass. The Eiffel Tower was actually sparkling - which can't be captured in a 30 second exposure.
There are very few such iconic constructions in the world.
Jerry Barton > Look what I found!
2012-06-16 Just a bit of whimsy today. This corner lot was abandoned and overgrown when we moved into the area four years ago. It has now been mown, and look what all turned up. A scooter, an exercise machine, a painting, lots of metal and wood and even a route marker for a highway miles away from here. Enjoy your Saturday!
Jerry Barton > Still more roses
2012-06-09 Roses go so quickly from tight blossoms to full bloom to decay. This shot was taken in the rose garden of Schönbrunn Palace here in Vienna - a quiet corner with not many tourists and unaffected by the open air Philharmonic concert. (It was shot against a dull featureless sky that I lightened). For more roses from Schönbrunn, feel free to visit my "Flowers" gallery: http://www.jerrybarton.eu/Nature/Flowers
Jerry Barton > Eager Beaver
2012-06-08 My first shot of one of Vienna's wild beavers. They had disappeared from the Vienna area until they were re-introduced in the 1970s. Now they are again plentiful. I was out yesterday bicycling in the Lobau (part of the Danube Wetlands National Park) and saw a photographer with a long lens. So I got out my long lens and pointed it in the same direction.
Thanks for the comments on the roses!
