Jerry Barton > Vienna by Night
2011-09-07 A sunset shot of the outdoor eating/drinking/dancing area on the "Danube Island", with the hills of the Vienna Woods in the background. The 'lighthouse' was a prop as part of the "Flying Dutchman" production at the Bregenz opera years ago, and now serves just as a landmark.

And thanks for the comments and the perseverance yesterday.
Jerry Barton > Say "cheese"
2011-09-06 This cheese maker from western Austria was at the garden show in eastern Austria last weekend. Free samples are a good marketing tool. Looks like he had a few sausages too.

Many thanks for the wonderful comments on my gong. It obviously rang a bell with many of you (sorry, couldn't resist)
Jerry Barton > Gooong!
2011-09-05 More from the garden show. Just what every garden needs - a huge gong (this one over a metre in diameter - call it 4 feet). A stand was selling gongs and wind chimes in all sizes from mini and very large.

Thanks for the comments on yesterday's ET shot. As I said, it was a different kind of show. :)
Jerry Barton > ET Meets the Empire
2011-09-04 My wife and I went to a garden fair on Friday, where the theme seemed to be 'everything for your garden other than plants' - so I'm afraid you will have to put up with some pictures from there for the next few days. Today's shot shows some garden art, posed in front of the Halbturn palace (1765) in eastern Austria. Other captions are welcome.

Thanks for the comments on my lapwing shot. It might be interesting to know that the German name is "Kiebitz" and my bird book describes it as a 'very noisy bird'.
Jerry Barton > Lapwing
2011-09-03 My wife and I were at a garden show yesterday in Austria's province of Burgenland, and decided to have lunch at a favorite restaurant. Along the way between show and food, we drove by a 'salt pond' - one of many such salty ponds in the area - and saw this lapwing. It was shy, so this is the best I could do. I assume the green on the wings is just reflection from the bright sun. The salt (mainly sodium carbonate) whitens the stones.

And thanks for the comments on yesterday's writing desk. So many great shots yesterday.
Jerry Barton > Scribere iussit amor
2011-09-02 The writing room in a reconstructed Roman house outside Vienna, Austria. They did a fine job of re-creating this house, complete with under-floor heating and a thermal plunge pool.
Thanks for the comments on the grapes. I have some of the 2009 and 2010 harvest in my cellar (as wine, of course).
Jerry Barton > Not quite harvest time
2011-09-01 These are Zweigelt grapes, growing in Vienna. They need another month before being harvested. Zweigelt is a cross, developed in 1922 by Fritz Zweigelt to have an Austrian red wine with a deep color and body. It is the most widely grown red grape in Austria and nearby countries.

Many thanks for the comments on my hibiscus shot. I haven't been commenting very much in the last few days - too busy. I'll try to do better.
Jerry Barton > Hibiscus
2011-08-31 A giant red hibiscus that I saw in the municipal flower gardens. I took a picture of the same plant last year (at least I think it was the same plant) from a different angle: http://www.jerrybarton.eu/Landscapes/Vienna/7986304_r9xtwT#928527450_PBbPT

Many thanks for the comments on various pictures. Much appreciated. I'll be 'on the town' today for organ practice and meetings - summer is over and all kinds of activities are starting up again, even for us old retirees.
Jerry Barton > Straight Shot
2011-08-29 I've finished processing my shots from Saturday's golf tournament for charity. This shot shows the youngest participant - who did very well. People had fun - although the day was hot - we passed out drinks around the course. The weather turned cool and rainy in the evening, so the grill party moved indoors.

Thanks for the comments on the shot of patterns in a sand trap.
Jerry Barton > Patterns
2011-08-29 Just a bit of fun today - I saw these patterns on Saturday and they caught my eye.

Many thanks for the comment on yesterday's golf course shot - I need to process the 100 or so shots today for the sponsor.
Jerry Barton > Golf
2011-08-28 Yesterday I had the chance to photograph a small golf tournament, held at the Hainburg Golf Club on Austria's eastern border. Rolling hills, a nice layout, and plenty of wind and sun to make things interesting.
Have a wonderful Sunday.
Jerry Barton > Large White
2011-08-26 Pieris brassicae. This is a much much better picture (in my humble opinion) of these small white butterflies currently flitting everywhere. A slightly different species - but when they are flying, you can't tell the difference. This one is resting briefly on a sorrel leaf in our garden. I went out before it got too hot and caught this shot.

Many thanks for the comments on yesterday's portrait - esp. to those of you who found the picture. It disappeared for about six hours from the 'dailies'.
Jerry Barton > Captain
2011-08-25 Herr Martin is captain of his reconstructed Tschaike that is used for tours on the Danube. A Tschaike is a 16th century long narrow military boat that was rowed. He also has renovated a ship's mill (uses river current to turn the stones). A fun afternoon with him - we are putting together a group for another trip in September.

Thanks for your kind comments on my shots in the last couple of days. They haven't been the best - more taken than made, less creative than I try to do. So I appreciate your comments especially.
Jerry Barton > Green-veined White
2011-08-24 These small butterflies are flitting around gardens and meadows - very difficult to catch on camera (at least for me).

Thanks for yesterday's comments and for posting excellent pictures. I didn't get around to much commenting yesterday - spent most of the day cleaning up the cellar to get away from the heat.
Jerry Barton > Goldenrod
2011-08-23 Goldenrod is a common garden plant in Europe, one of the few late summer bloomers, thus attracting bees and wasps.

Many thanks for the comments on yesterday's mask. I'll have to re-post it at Halloween ;)
