2012-04-30 Looking at some unprocessed pictures from last month, I came across this salamander displaying something under its chin. I don't know anything about salamanders, but I assume it is a defence/warning device. I caught it in this one shot, along with several rather boring pictures of it simply sunning itself. Taken in Sarasota, FL.

2012-04-28 It is mating season along the edges of the slow-moving waters in the Lobau park near me. This frog is one of many that 'accompanied' my walk in the park yesterday this croaks and gurgles. This one is pretending to be part of the natural cover in a hidden corner of water.

2012-04-19 I did what I mentioned in my previous post - I went back to the Botanical Gardens with my tripod and made a sharper picture. The light was different as well (brighter), and I notice that I was closer than in the original picture. Still, in my humble opinion, this shot is better than the previous one for the 'shades of green' competition. [and by the way, both shots have been rotated to horizontal, the original is vertical.] Many thanks for your comments and thoughts.

2012-04-17 As seen at the Vienna University Botanical Gardens. The local photo club has a theme of 'shades of green' for its monthly contest. When I spotted this collection of bamboo, and then noted the inscription, I thought it might work. I don't think it is sharp enough for submission, though (hand-held, high ISO, low DOF). I'll have to go back with a tripod.

2012-04-13 A view to the east from the top terrace of Schosshof, on Austria's eastern border. Schlosshof was built 1720-30 as a baroque palace for Prince Eugene of Savoy, and suffered neglect and dismantling for most of the 20th century. Restoration began in 2002 (for example, the pond in the foreground has not yet been restored). The March (Morava) River that marks the border is hidden behind the dark green trees, and the village is Devínska Nová Ves in Slovakia.

2012-04-12 Spring gets things moving, and this rooster (at Schlosshof in eastern Austria) was making sure that everyone knows that he is king of the barnyard.

2012-03-24 Yesterday I was out and about from before dawn to dusk - 614 shots on the chip, first selection down to fifty. Now to look at them closely. This great white egret is one of them, showing off his breeding plumage.

2012-03-21 I'm not sure what kind of bird this is - the curved bill makes me guess "Ibis", but the colors are not right for an Ibis. At any rate, it swallowed the fish even before its bill left the water. It seems to have a satisfied look on its face.
