Jerry Barton > Pirate
2012-02-24 Every winter, the city of Vienna creates a large ice skating rink in front of City Hall. Last Tuesday was costume day (Mardi Gras, Faschingsdienstag). Not many people actually dressed up. Here is one at least with a pirate's hat.
Jerry Barton > Bathing Beach
2012-02-08 The Gänslhäufel island is a favorite swimming area in Vienna - easily reached by public transportation, it is surrounded by the almost still waters of the "Alte Donau" - a cut-off arm of the Danube. In summer, the place is packed. Now one can walk across the ice and get onto the island for free. Still very cold here, and this is our first real snow.
Jerry Barton > Crossing the park
2012-02-03 This is the 40m high steel cross erected in 1983 in the park in Vienna where Pope John Paul II celebrated a mass. It was recently refurbished. Joggers, walkers, sports teams, picnickers, tourists, etc use the park now.
Jerry Barton > Last Bridge
2012-01-30 That little sliver of blue is actually the Danube River. This bridge over the Danube (and the adjoining wetlands) is the eastern-most bridge in Austria. For several decades, the road ran parallel to the iron curtain. Now it is just a convenient way between north-eastern Austria and Bratislava.

Many thanks for the kind comments on my reeds. The very strange (for eastern Austria) below freezing and clear air made a special light.
Jerry Barton > Winter Reeds
2012-01-29 Yesterday was one of the first really freezing but bright days along the Danube. Reeds abound along the Danube shores, where low wetlands host a multitude of animal and plant life. This view was taken practically at the border of Austria and Slovakia in the afternoon sun.

Many thanks for the comments on the winter jogger. I was about 260m above her on a tower.
Jerry Barton > Winter Jogger
2012-01-27 On her way through the Danube Park in Vienna's 22nd district.
Jerry Barton > Toy Town
2012-01-26 Between the Danube River and the 'old Danube' recreation water (here at the top) there is an area that used to be flood plain and where the rubble of the second World War was dumped. People built small houses there in the 1950s - most of those have been replaced now by full sized houses. I thought about giving this shot a tilt-shift like tight focus, but since the picture itself has no single focal point, it didn't look right.
Jerry Barton > The Port of Vienna (Wiener Hafen)
2012-01-24 Another view of 'the non-historical Vienna'. About half way between the North Sea and the Black Sea, the port handles about 1700 vessels annually, transferring oil products, grains, building materials between the ships and trains and trucks. Business has been booming in the last decade. The port is slightly down-river from the center of town. The structure in the foreground is a traditional private fishing hut - floating on the water, but moored more or less permanently.

Thanks for your comments on my sunset shot. Much appreciated.
Jerry Barton > Yet another sunset
2012-01-19 This time of year, I'll take any sunshine I can find, even if it that small amount found just after sunset. Those were our first snow clouds moving into Vienna, but we are now having a few days of cold rain.

Many thanks for your comments on my mistletoe shot. Lots of it around here. For those of you who haven't seen it, it grows from sticky seeds in bird droppings and is a parasite, taking nutrients from the tree.
Jerry Barton > A touch of green
2012-01-18 Almost the only green we have this time of year - mistletoe growing along the banks of the Danube (and slowly killing the trees).
Jerry Barton > Danube Sunset
2012-01-17 Yesterday was overcast. But in late afternoon some gaps appeared in the clouds and I headed out with the camera. This shot was taken from the 'Danube Island' (Donauinsel) looking towards the west - an area of small industry that fortunately was hidden behind the trees and the flood dam.
Jerry Barton > Watching
2012-01-14 Today's picture from yesterday's trip to the zoo. The 'noise' from the high ISO has been cleaned up, otherwise untouched.

Many thanks for the comments on yesterday's seal shot.
Jerry Barton > Pirouette de Pinniped
2012-01-13 Taken yesterday at the zoo here in Vienna. He's not really dancing, of course, just catching a fish (you can just see the fish's tail).

Jerry Barton > Sanpshots
2012-01-02 Welcome to 2012. I seem to have a problem with motivation at the moment. Two days ago I picked up the camera - after a week without. There was a bit of sun, so I went downtown in Vienna to photograph 'interesting stairs' and ended up with these shots - more like snapshots than my usual quality. These all come from the area that used to be next to the Danube before it was regulated (i.e. before 1860). Top right Maria am Gestade baroque church, bottom right Ruprechts chuch (oldest in Vienna - around 1200), bottom left a stairway down to the Danube Canal, top right the Kornhäusl Tower with no stairway or even a ground floor door at all (1837 - built by the architect as a haven away from his wife).
Jerry Barton > Merry Christmas from Vienna
2011-12-24 One last ornament for the tree. I hope you have a good and peaceful time with friends and family. All the best to all SM friends and thanks for your comments throughout the year. Jerry Barton
