French Romantic in Vienna
2012-05-12 The beautiful organ (2004) in the Jesuitenkirche (Jesuits Church, aka Old University Church) in Vienna. It is a faithful reproduction of a French romantic organ - even down to the slightly narrower keys and narrower gaps between pedals. The fresco is "the adoration by the shepherds" by Andrea Pozzo (1702).
Many thanks for the comments on my butterfly.
Voices
2012-05-04 Organ pipes at the St. Francis of Assisi church. I like the way there are curves and rectangles.
Many thanks for the comments on the cherry grove.
1940 Rieger
2012-04-23 The 'monthly organ tour' has started again. This one, built by Rieger Brothers was constructed during the war in a church that was at that time in the 'immigrant quarter' of Vienna. It has three manuals, and 56 voices, including several that I had never seen before (except on electronic organs): Gedacktpommer, Bombarde, Harfenprinzipal, Untersatz, etc. And more little buttons than I've ever seen before.
Another Organ
2011-12-07 Yes, it's organ time again. This is the organ of the Deutschordenskirche (Church of the Order of Teutonic Knights) in Vienna. It was built in 1864 with one manual and the pipes you see in this picture. A second manual and more pipers were added in 1962. The enclosed empore funnels the sound a bit, but it does keep the organist a bit warmer :) The church itself is small and simple. This church and the surrounding areas are the headquarters of the order, which today is a small catholic order doing charitable work, mainly in eastern Europe.
Walcker organ 1878
2011-11-12 This week I had the chance to 'visit' the organ of the Votive Church (Votivkirche) here in Vienna. Renovated in 1996, it is still the original organ dating from the construction of the church. 61 registers, 3 manuals. And it sounds wonderful. This church received very little damage in the war. Here you see a shot of the other 'colleagues' up in the organ loft during the explanation (I had returned downstairs due to some vertigo up there). [and the perspective has therefore been straightened]
It's organ season again
2011-11-04 The season for organ concerts has started again here. This is the organ in the church of Vienna's central cemetery - the art nouveau jewel I've featured before. The organ was expertly played by a young Slovak organist. Normally the cemetery is closed after dark, but the city opened it for us.
The Old Stone Church
2011-05-09 The Old Stone Church is in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It has been at the same site since 1857 - the church today is essentially from 1884. The organ is new, 1976 by Holtkamp Organ Company, but the housing is from 1895. It just glows - in fact the whole sanctuary glows. (P.S. its Tiffany stain glass windows on tomorrow's potd)
Organ demonstration
2011-04-22 I almost forgot to post the picture of the demonstration several of us had of the new organ at the Musikverein in Vienna. The Professor who heads the organ department of the University for Music and Performing Arts led us through the various stops and settings. The speciality of this organ is - in addition to playing in different styles - is that the action is very fast, since the organ is meant to be played with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, so timing is essential. It was a fun afternoon. P.S. most of the pipes are hidden behind cloth 'walls'.

Many thanks for the kind comments on the magnolia blossom - much appreciated.
Hofburg Organ
2011-01-22 Enough of the mountains - back to the city. This shot shows the organ in the Hofburg palace chapel (where the Vienna Boy's Choir sings). As you may notice, it is new and not fancy. The reason being that it is on the 3rd story and set back in an alcove. Thus it needs more oomph to get the sound out and down, but doesn't need decoration. The organ has two manuals C- g''', 27 voices including baroque German and romantic French voices, pedals C- f' , is completely mechanical plus electronic presets. It was built by Kuhn AG in 2003.

The next organ picture will be (I hope) at the end of March - the organ of the Franciscan Church - the oldest organ in Vienna (1682 I believe) that is now being renovated.

Many thanks for the comments on the paraglider shot. I've sometimes thought it would be interesting to take pictures from such a vantage point - but you could never get me to run off the edge of a cliff!
