To the West 2011-01-19 Today's shot is a continuation of the series I shot on Monday. Yesterday's post was to the south - foothills covered in fog. To the west, the land rises and becomes alpine. The large snow covered mountain is the eponymous Schneeberg, 2076m. It is extremely unusual to see this area without snow in January. It had already received a good meter of snow at least, and it all melted in the last two weeks (and is scheduled to be covered with snow again by this weekend). P.S. I'm standing on the Hohe Wand, at approx 1000m.
Misty Mountains 2011-01-18 Yesterday I drove out to the alps near Vienna, since it was dreary and foggy in the town and clear and dry above the fog. This is a view of the Alpine foothills showing the thick fog that reached up to about 800m. More tomorrow. Thanks for the comments on the ice skating rink. It will indeed be a colourful and busy place by the end of the week.
Slight Flooding 2011-01-16 Yesterday my wife and I drove a bit upstream to see the Danube flooding. On Friday the river had spread over the nearby roads - by Saturday it was receding (further upstream in Passau the water was still rising). Vienna itself is well protected - about 7000 cubic meters per second flowing yesterday, Vienna is prepared for at least twice that amount. And many thanks for the comments on last week's Bridge at Dusk shot. Sorry I've been absent for the last three days - was 'retiree busy' and didn't take any pictures.
