Spires 2011-09-12 Looking slightly south of east with the sun behind Vienna's first mosque, dedicated in 1979 with a 32m high minaret. Behind it is the "Danube Tower", with an observation deck and restaurant 152m above ground. Yesterday's shot of stairs didn't meet with much approval (or with some hearty disapproval by a few). Oh well. Another day, another shot.
Calendar, page 1 2011-07-03 I'm starting to work on a 2012 calendar to sell in December. So nothing new here except the layout. These shots are, of course, of the St. Stephan's Cathedral at the center of Vienna. The calendar pages are landscape (8.5x11 inches - using lulu.com, which I found via johnloguk), so I have to create layouts whenever I want to include portrait shots. During most of July we will be travelling in the UK, including on a narrowboat on the English canals, so working on layouts will give me something to do in the evenings (no wireless in the canal boats). Many thanks for the kind comments on yesterday's reflections. Much appreciated.
Scourging Angel 2011-06-10 I decided to post another of the interior shots from the church in the Vienna Central Cemetery - mainly because I have never heard of an angel with a morning star. This mosaic is above one of the side portals. Does anybody know a theological reference for such an (arch)angel? Update: Problem solved. I went back today with my wife, who pointed out that there are six such portals, each with an angel holding one of the Passion implements. All around the church are icons of the crucifixion - and the altar is the resurrection. Many thanks for the comments on yesterday's shot of the dome of the church.
