The gate of the St. Marx cemetery - when only Christians were buried - has both a cross and a star - nobody seems to know why.

Schützenhaus

From the architect Otto Wagner in 1907, as part of his work to make the canal navigable. This house was originally a work place, with a lock and a weir across the canal in front of it. The weir plates were stored on the ground floor and the top had the crane to lift and move the plates. The weir and locks were destroyed in 1945. The building opened as a restaurant in 2011.

The Esterhazy Cellars

A favorite place while I was a student. Even then the stairs into the cellars always seemed longer when coming back upstairs. Now they are steep both ways.

The Habsburg Lion

Guarding the main entrance to the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. That entrance is now for the National Library.

The Blue Hour

Looking across the Neue Donau to the 'DonauCity' residences and technical businesses, and in the background part of the UN's Vienna International Centre is still visible. And of course the Danube Tower in the background. All these building are built on what was flood plain for the Danube and, after the 2nd World War, the main rubble disposal site for Vienna. The first complex built there, the VIC with its 28 floors, is now dwarfed by the DC Tower with over 60 floors.

The New Imperial Bridge (Reichsbrücke)

connecting Vienna's 22nd district across the Danube with the main city. The bridge holds the U1 subway/metro line. The 'Hochhaus Neue Donau' behind the bridge has 33 floors, and was finished in 2002.

Vienna Bookstore

This bookstore, in the pedestrian Kohlmarkt street in the center of Vienna, is one of the few stores still there since my student days [n.b. the rest are upscale, like Tiffany, Burberry, Dior, etc]. The portal was designed in 1912 by Adolf Loos, using Freudian theories that say that the recessed entry and the indirect lighting cause a subconscious urge to enter the store. Works for me (or any other book store, for that matter).

Nail Makers' Lane

Naglergasse, 1 district, Vienna The naglergasse is a narrow pedestrian lane that (back in Roman and early medieval times) formed one of the walls of the city. Now it has several small shops. This lady has been standing on façade of Naglergasse 2 - the entrance to the lane - since the house was built in 1901.

Shoemaker

This shoemaker's shop in Vienna's Naglergasse has been around for a few generations. Now specializing in orthopaedic shoes, since few people can afford custom crafted shoes today.

The White Angel Apothecary

The White Angel The 'Apotheke zum weissen Engel' has been around in Vienna since 1612, and in this location in the 1st district since 1902. The façade is one of the best examples of 'floral Jugendstil' in the city, with medicine flowing down into bowls watched over by snakes and angels.

A warm cafe on a dark day

The Aida chain of coffee houses has been around Vienna since 1925. Not the best, but far from the worst. Their corporate color is pink.

Floating Spires

A misty view towards downtown Vienna. The tallest spire is that of St. Stephan's Cathedral in the exact center of the city.

City Hall

Vienna City Hall (Rathaus) The world really doesn't need another snapshot of the Rathaus - but here is one. The tower is 98m tall - at the express wish of the Kaiser so that it would be shorter than the tower of a nearby church - but then the politicians put a "Rathausmann" on top of the tower.

Classic Vienna

Classic Vienna The companion to yesterday's shot. A view over the first and third districts of Vienna. In the foreground, the Heldenplatz park with the Theseus "temple" (never a place of worship - just built to house a sculpture that is in the art history museum). In the middle the "Neue Burg" extension of the Hofburg palace ("new" because it was added to the 13th century palace in the 1870s) - the illuminated part mainly holds the National Library. Behind it is the roof of the State Opera, then the Karlskirche (St. Charles Church) and in the far back is the Belvedere Palace.

University of Vienna Courtyard The companion shot to yesterday's arcade shot. There are several events this year to celebrate the university's 650th anniversary. To Terry's comment yesterday about not honoring women faculty: The first woman allowed to teach at the university was Elise Richter who taught in the 1920s and 30s as an 'extra-ordinary professor' but was never granted tenure. As a Jew, she was fired in 1938, deported to Theriesenstadt in 1942 and killed. Not all the history here is savory. Today, still only about 10% of the faculty is female.

Arcade

Arcade of the University of Vienna The University is celebrating its 650th anniversary this year. This main building isn't 650 years old, of course. It was opened in 1884. The arcade surrounds three sides of a central courtyard. There are busts and memorials to important professors. [including finally since 1955 a bust of Sigmund Freud, and more recently one for a woman.]

Musikverein

The Vienna Musikverein A concert hall built in 1868, it is the home of the Vienna Philharmonic, and rates as one of the top concert halls in the world. This shot has a far bit of pp, frankly - including removing the surrounding inner city buildings and adding a better sky. (I don't know why the black flag was flying, nor do I know the purpose of the stone monolith)

Sunset over Vienna A sight we don't see very often - especially in winter. I'm standing on the Danube Island, looking north to the 'new Vienna' in the 22nd district. The actual sunset is over my left shoulder.

Paris? No, Vienna

Paris? No, Vienna One of the two obelisks at the main entrance of Schönbrunn Palace. Some say that Napoleon had them erected when he lived there, but they are on the original plans, and their construction is not mentioned in his butler's memoirs from 1895.

Vienna Vineyards

Vienna Vineyards These and other vineyards are part of the city of Vienna. On a clear day (rare now) in autumn they glow. Yesterday's shot was a close-up (and thank you for all the comments!) - today's shot is wider. The different colors come from different varieties of grapes.

Autumn in the Park I spent some time in the "Stadtpark" in Vienna yesterday. This Art Nouveau path leads along the covered Vienna River and was completed in 1906. The "Virginia Creeper" (or whatever it really is in Europe) is looking good. Shot yesterday, after the fog finally burned off.

Central Station

Vienna's new Central Train Station Vienna has never had a central train station (it had South Station, East Station, West Station, North Station, plus a few more). As of next Monday, the new station will be open, with all the 'bells and whistles" (as it were). P.S. To my previous shot of Columbus Square, Columbus is seen in Europe (particularly central/northern Europe) as one of the first explorers/scientists of the Renaissance, so is honored for having an empirical approach to expanding knowledge.

Columbus Square

Columbusplatz A square in Vienna's 10th district, just outside the old 'tax border' (the present Gürtel parkway) and near the old Southern Train Station. In the 1890s it was a market square and these building were constructed. Today there is a shopping center behind me, the entire street in a pedestrian zone, and it leads directly to the new central train station.

DC Tower

DC Towers 1 Austria's tallest building - 60 floors, 220 meters high, recently completed on the "Danube City" area of Vienna, on the Danube's left bank. The second tower is already under construction although this one is far from fully occupied.
