District 1: Hohe Markt The "Vermählungsbrunnen" (Marriage Fountain) was pledged by Emperor Leopold I to to build a fountain if his son Joseph came back from war. The fountain actually was built by his son after Leopold's death in 1705. It shows the marriage of Maria and Joseph by a high priest. Although showing a Jewish ceremony, it is a Christian construction and therefore was not destroyed by the Nazis during their annexation of Austria.
District 3. The home of the penguins. For years the balcony on the corner of Am Heumarkt and Salesianergasse has been home to a family of penguins (winter) or a single penguin (the rest of the year). They were used in the Austria Tourist Advertising campaign in 1998-99. But why??
