Vienna 1715 2011-10-13 This shot shows a detail of the carving above the main doors of the Karlskirche in Vienna. The church was conceived as a votive offering by the emperor Charles VI for relief from the plague. The scene shows the patron saint of the church (St. Karl Borromäus) pleading with heaven in the name of the city - which can be seen in the background. Many thanks for the comments on the 'organic house' shot - esp. to Paul for 'resuscitating' the picture once it had disappeared.
"Hill Arches" 2011-10-12 Quasi as contrast to yesterday's classic buildings, the 1979 sculpture by Henry Moore in the reflecting pool in front of the Karlskirche in Vienna. If you stand looking at both, it looks greatly out of place, but if you stand with your back to the church (as in this shot), it looks very nice (especially now that the trees have grown so you can't see the other baroque and jugendstil buildings surrounding the park). Many thanks for the comments on yesterday's shot. I have a few more Otto Wagner building shots I'll put up soon.
Jugendstil The house built by Otto Wagner - Vienna's premier Jugendstil architect - in 1898 on the Linke Wienzeile street at number 40. The surface is ceramic tiles that can be cleaned easily. Floral patterns are everywhere. [This version cleaned up to deal with wide angle distortion]
