Interview

Preparing for an Interview Yesterday I was interviewed by the Austrian television station ORF. The Vienna regional station is running a series called 'my favorite summer place in Vienna'. I sent them a picture and they liked it. They create 2 minute episodes that are included in the nightly news. This is a shot taken by my wife as the make-up was being finished. This segment is planned to be shown Tuesday evening, featuring the nature around this location. And oh yes, I'll have to do something about that belly if I want a career in television!

The Graduate

The Graduate It was graduation weekend, so lots of parents might be posting similar pictures, but here is our youngest, graduating from Hiram College in Ohio. We are proud of him. His summer job starts today. He is following his passion - technical theater. He wore an Austrian sash during the ceremony (which did NOT get rained on) since he comes from Austria.

The boys 2013-07-08 My son and his two sons - taken on a very sunny day in Cascade Park, Bangor, Maine. My son is actually standing on a mown path through the meadow, trying to decide if it will lead us back to the car.

Giant Lettuce 2013-06-12 A few days ago, our daughter-in-law took a picture of her husband (our son) with her old phone and sent to via phone to her mother's phone who sent it to us. 320x180 highly pixelated. Just for fun, I passed it through Perfect Resize to a 2133x1200 pixel. Which means 98% of the pixels are artificial. And presto! - bushes became giant lettuce.

Mittens for Steven His Christmas present, finished by my wife Christmas Eve. The basic mitten wool is hand spun and knit. The right-hand mitten is inside out to show the long lengths of wool that were left so they can felt and provide more warmth. I hope your holidays have been happy so far.

Spinning 2011-11-12 A new challenge for my wife. She found a place to purchase wool in Vienna and has spun some already and has started making a hat. Many thanks for the comments on my lamp post.

Thanks, Harsh! 2011-09-16 OK, so it ain't a great photo - but I wanted to show how we mounted Harsh's (Hershey) picture of Tigress T17 in our guest room. Many thanks to Harsh for his kind permission to use his masterpiece in this way - especially since my mother-in-law is visiting from the US and she worked in India in the 1960s (and my wife grew up there).

Summer Daze 2011-06-15 Our college student is home for the holidays. This is a common activity. [Shot taken on a little tour of a portion of the Danube Wetlands National Park] P.S. He really is a help around the house.

A Walk in the Woods 2011-05-29 In central Maine, where my grandson doesn't seem to be enjoying himself too much. First time I saw him was during my recent visit. Both he and his brother are excellent boys. The snow has melted, so it is time for short sleeves and bug repellent and off we go.

Dirty Boy 2011-01-24 This young man is now 28 years old. Shown here in a digitized 35mm slide, doing what he liked while his parents were working on creating a lawn and garden. He seems to have survived.

Somewhere 2010-11-22 Another shot scanned from a slide. This one I can date: 1983, probably late summer or early autumn. But where? Best guess by my wife would be somewhere within an hour's drive of Vienna. There are spotlights in the water looking up the slope. It just rings no bells whatsoever.

Looks cold 2010-11-21 Working through some old scanned 35mm slides yesterday, I came across this shot. I have no idea where or when it was taken. Best guess is at the Athabasca Glacier by lake Louise, Canada, taken in 1973 +- 1 year. At any rate, the colors and lines caught my eye, so I thought I would share it. Many thanks for the comments on yesterday's blossom picture. That bit of sun was really an exception, and we are back to grey, drizzle, windy and generally blah weather.

Yellowstone 1986 2010-09-11 I recently uncovered a cache of old slides and had them digitized - and have started a family gallery of embarassing baby shots to send to our sons. (or maybe better to their wives). Here is Edward, thrilled by the steam and colors - his first study in college was geology.

04:45 a.m. 2010-08-10 Our son is leaving for the States. Here he is loading the car so we can get to the airport on time. My wife says she is planning a 'retirement party' for herself - no more children at home. Thanks for your thoughts and wishes on Steven's new adventure. Posting these pictures may have been a bit of closure for me. At any rate, no more family pix for a while.

Saying Farewell Our youngest - Steven (on the left) - has less than one day to finish packing his bags before leaving Vienna for college in the US (Hiram, Ohio). This is a grill party with a few friends from a week ago. He will be met in Chicago by his brother and taken to college by relatives. Big step for him and an 'empty nest' for the first time in about 30 years. I didn't get around to posting anything yesterday. Oh well. Between church and a special meal for Steven, the day sped by. Thank you for all your comments on the 'above ground bunkers'. Housing costs are just so high that 'cheap row houses' sell whatever they look like.
