The Danube Wetlands National Park stretches from Vienna to the Slovakian border. Created in 1996, twelve years after protests started against damming the Danube, it protects about 9,300 hectares of wetlands. It is home to over 700 kinds of plants, 30 mammals, 100 kinds of birds, 8 reptile species, several amphibians, and over 60 kinds of fish (and still counting).
